There are perceptions about physical education teachers all the time. When most people think about p.e. teachers they think we don't do anything, roll out the basketballs and read the paper, that we get paid to play, and have no academic knowledge of anything. These are labels that I'm not proud to hear when I think of my job title. From my experience, physical education teachers are the most interactive teachers at school. Physical education teachers get the chance to spend time with all students. As a p.e. teacher I interact with 400 plus students of grades k-4th at least twice a week. Classroom teachers will interact with 25 plus students of the particular grade they teach unless they are on some type of duty. So p.e. teachers have a chance to impact more lives. The point of this is that p.e. teachers deserve the same respect as any other teachers. Before people use all the bad labels about p.e. teachers think about how many lives they are impacting on a daily basis. This is what makes us so important to our comunity and schools.

I have done one period of athletics for the last two years. I can't believe how many students they can put into a class at one time. It is a hard job keeping kids entertained during PE, especially when there are so many.
I have a p.e. degree and went back to add the elementary/middles school certification to my degree. I enjoy the classroom, but I REALLY miss the p.e. Teachers like you can change the way others view p.e. teachers.
I think P.E. teachers are taken advantage of because of the number of students that are placed into the classes.
This may be because I'm lazy and like teenagers, but I think there's probably a special place in heaven for a PE teacher who works with younger kids!! What patience you must have!
And my brother majored in kinesiology for a while. He said those classes are hard!!!
Your description of the p.e. teacher label that people sometimes refer to (play, read paper), might have been more prevalent years ago. Now, though, I see p.e. teachers who tailor their curriculum to supplement the regular classroom teacher in addition to meeting their own phys. ed. standards. That's quite a job! In TX, the p.e. teacher where I worked was even required to have a word wall up in the gym. You guys are underrated!
I have great respect for P.E. teachers. I do believe there are some that take advantage of of them and give them too many kids at one time. You still need smaller classes to make sure you are reaching all of the students.
It's great that you enjoy your job. Just think you can change peoples perceptions of p.e. teachers by just doing your job and meeting your students needs.
P.E. teachers definitely have their hands full. I have seen the number of students placed in one p.e. class, you have to do more than roll out balls and read papers in order to keep that many kids from killing each other (LOL) :)
I have subbed for P.E. teachers. Those that have a negative view for these teachers, let them walk in your shoes for a day. Views would change. I have the upmost respect for you and your chosen profession.
You do have the opportunity to touch so many lives.....anyone who says that all P.E. teachers don't have a real job should have to spend a day in your shoes......that would change some thoughts! Keep up the great work!
I teach an elective too, so see many students. I do have to be honest that most PE teachers that I have met are exactly in that category that you described. It is nice to see that you are not like that, and that you take your job very seriously. BTW..missed you in class yesterday!
Marlon- We're done!!! I found out today that I've been signed up to be in charge of some stuff at Ida Burns. SO I nominate you to help me! Hope that's okay!
